On Friday 10 October after work we drive through heavy rain to Dublin, and stayed the night at the Airport Raddison Hotel as we had an early flight the following morning to Dubrovnik. The early wake-up call wasn’t pleasant but it meant that we arrived in Dubrovnik at around midday. The contrast with Ireland when we stepped off the plane was stunning – Cyprus trees, parched hills, warm air and blue skies. Just about the opposite of where we had departed.

Our apartment was inside the Old City, and was a great base from which to explore the labyrinth of narrow streets.
On Sunday and Monday mornings we enjoyed having breakfast in a market square, watching the locals going about their business in the relative quiet before the cruise liners disgorged thousands of tourists into the city, overwhelming the place.

It didn’t take long for Marian and I to find the nearest beach, which had crystal clear blue water and lots of fish swimming about.
On Sunday evening, we walked a complete circuit of the Old City on top of the walls. In the evening light the views over the old tiled roofs were stunning. It is the best time of day to do the walk, as the cruise liner passengers had all departed and the heat had gone from the day.

After nearly exhausting Mum with the roof walk, we made it to the little bar perched on the rocks, accessable through a small opening in the city wall. Sipping a cold beer we watched the sun set.
