Caher Island and Inishturk, 15 August 2010

On Sunday Marian and I took a ferry to Caher Island, (Cathair na Naomh in Irish), an uninhabited island off the coast of Mayo between Clare Island and Inishturk. Its name in Irish means the City of the Saints, and it was the site of an early Christian monastic settlement (around the 6th and seventh centuries A.D.). Saint Patrick himself is said to have spent some time there after his fast on top of Croagh Patrick.
On the 15th of August every year, the Feast of the Assumption, there is a pilgrimage to the island. So Marian and I decided to join the pilgramage and take in some of the scenery. There was quite a large flotilla to the island, and as there is no jetty, everyone had to clamber from small boats onto the rocks to get onto the island.
After Mass on the Island, we clambered back onto a boat and took the short journey to neighbouring Inishturk, which has a jetty and houses on it.
